National bookstore chain Barnes & Noble has filed an application to open another store in Overland Park, according to city documents.

The company is planning to move into an existing 14,673-square-foot space in the burgeoning Bluhawk development. If the permit is issued, its address will be 7840 W. 161st St.

The new bookstore would neighbor Rack Room Shoes and Sierra, formerly Sierra Trading Post.

Barnes & Noble currently has five locations in the Kansas City area, including one at Oak Park Mall in Overland Park.

The sprawling mixed-use Bluhawk development will soon be home to the 420,000-square-foot AdventHealth Sports Park , which will include ice rinks, basketball courts, volleyball courts, a sprinting track and a café.

In May, Bluhawk’s developers announced that a “lifestyle center” called The Boundary will be built nearby by 2024. It will feature 200,000 square feet of restaurants and shops, a big screen, a fountain, and several green spaces and play areas.

Other Bluhawk tenants include Cosentino’s Market, Costa Vida and Jinya Ramen Bar.

The newest Overland Park Barnes & Noble wouldbe part of the seller’s largest expansion plan in more than a decade. It opened 30 stores in 2023 and aims to open 50 new stores this year, according to trade magazine Publisher’s Weekly.
