Ravens player who was injured against Kansas City Chiefs blasts KC’s medical staff

Chiefs players gave the team’s training staff a failing grade in last season’s NFLPA report card , and it seems at least one Ravens player would agree with that.

Baltimore linebacker Kyle Van Noy suffered a fractured orbital bone during the Chiefs’ 27-20 win over the Ravens Thursday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in the NFL Kickoff Game.

Van Noy talked about his injury on his McCoy & Van Noy podcast, and explained how he was injured while making a play on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the second half.

“My face is flat after hitting Mahomes, and then (Ravens defensive tackle Justin) Madubuike hit Mahomes at the same time,” Van Noy said. “My head was flat; Mahomes’ body landed on top of my helmet. My helmet skipped under my chin strap and then Justin happened to lay his whole body weight on top of me, having the top pad of my helmet in my eye smashing the ground.

“The ground is undefeated, and I ended up suffering that fractured orbital bone in my eye.”

Van Noy said testing on his eye continues with specialists, but he also made a point of talking about the Chiefs training staff.

It wasn’t to praise them.

“I was disappointed in the way the training staff of the Chiefs handled the situation,” Van Noy said. “When you get hurt, especially something that could be serious like mine was, you’re supposed to rely on the (home) team’s training staff or their doctors, and I was supposed to see an ophthalmologist …

“They took an entire quarter to get down to talk to me in the locker room, which, to me, is unacceptable. Because then you start thinking, ‘What if I was trying to go back in the game? What if I was really, really hurt?’ I know mine happened to be moderate, but it still was serious because it’s the eye, and your expectation of someone to be down there as the training staff asks them to be down there, would have had a little bit more urgency.”

Van Noy said that time lapse was “super unprofessional” and added a doctor or friend of the doctor was “double cup fisted, Styrofoam cups, like everything was good.”

Then Van Noy mentioned the NFLPA report card.

“I understand how Kansas City — the players — have given that training room an F,” Van Noy said. “Because with my experience, I would have probably after that given them an F, too.”

Van Noy did praise the work done at the emergency room at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

“They took care of me in the wee hours into the morning, did an awesome job,” Van Noy said.
