A Kansas City man accused breaking into a Walgreens in Waldo through the drive-thru window has been charged with burglary, court documents show.

George Carter, 23, was charged with second-degree burglary and property damage, both felonies, in the the break-in.

The break-in happened around 3 a.m. on Sept. 10, according to court records.

A witness who was delivering supplies to a nearby Chipotle around 3:15 a.m. told police detectives he’d seen a black pickup truck parked just outside the pharmacy’s drive-thru window, which was broken. The witness said that he saw several people climb repeatedly into the pharmacy through the window and exit carrying what amounted to five or six bags of pharmaceuticals.

The truck, allegedly driven by Carter, was parked in the pharmacy’s drive-thru lane just outside the drugstore window when Kansas City police arrived, according to court documents.

An officer reported seeing two male suspects, one of whom was later identified as Carter, run away.

Carter was arrested later that day after another officer witnessed him running into a nearby building, according to court documents.

Multiple prescription bottles were found just inside the broken window of the Walgreens after the break-in, some in a large trash bag. An exterior door of the building suffered about $6,000 worth of damage during the burglary, according to court documents.

Traces of blood were also found at the scene.

Carter denied involvement in the break-in, according to court documents. He will next appear in court at 10 a.m. Sept. 20 a.m. for a bond review hearing.

Wednesday’s break-in was the latest in a string of property and vehicle crimes that have worried residents in and near Waldo in recent weeks.

Between January and August, 121 property crimes were reported in the police patrol division covering Waldo and nearby Brookside. In the same timeframe, 376 cars were stolen in the area.

Three weeks ago, two juveniles were arrested in connection with a series of more than a dozen car break-ins . Meanwhile, police are still investigating an attempted break-in at a CVS in Brookside , when a driver rammed their vehicle into the front of the pharmacy and tried to steal an ATM machine.
