Update: The victim has been identified by police as 36-year-old Michael D. Porter.

One man died in a shooting that began with an argument at an apartment complex Thursday night, police said.

Officers responded to a reported shooting around 9:45 p.m. at the 6300 block of Manchester Avenue. Inside an apartment, they found a man unresponsive with gunshot wounds.

Officers checked the victim for any signs of life and were unable to find a pulse, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokeswoman with Kansas City police, in an email. Paramedics pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.

Gonzalez said investigators believe the victim and another man were involved in a verbal altercation that led to the shooting. The other man, a suspect in the case, left the scene before officers arrived, she said.

The shooting is being investigated as a homicide. Detectives and crime scene personnel were gathering evidence and talking to witnesses Thursday.

Police have not yet released the name of the victim.

The killing is Kansas City’s 114th homicide of 2024 , according to data tracked by The Star. At this time last year , the city had recorded 142 homicides.

If anyone has information about the shooting, they are asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
