A toddler was hit by a car and killed after she wandered out of the house unnoticed, Michigan authorities said.

Troopers responded just before 8:30 p.m. Sept. 13 to a report of a car-pedestrian crash in Allen Township, according to a Sept. 14 news release from the Michigan State Police First District.

Troopers found a 2-year-old girl “lying in the road” and performed life-saving measures until EMS arrived, authorities said. She was taken to a local hospital where she died from her injuries, troopers said.

An initial investigation revealed the toddler wandered out of the house and into the road after her parents put her to bed, according to Michigan State Police.

The girl’s parents were “working around the home,” when she walked out, authorities said. The girl’s identity has not been released.

Authorities said she was hit by a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 38-year-old man. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the accident, troopers said.

Allen Township is about a 115-mile drive southwest from Detroit.
