A person on a scooter was hit and killed Thursday after being struck by a speeding car while in an unmarked crosswalk on East 51st Street and Troost Avenue, according to Kansas City police.

Police said a red Ford Focus was traveling at a high rate of speed going northbound on Troost just before noon on Sept. 26.

The person on the scooter was crossing Troost from east to west, in the middle of the roadway and in an unmarked crosswalk, when they were struck by the Ford, according to police. The person was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the Ford stopped immediately and stayed at the scene. The driver is suspected to have been impaired at the time of the crash, according to KCPD. The investigation is continuing, police said.

This marks the 71st traffic fatality on Kansas City streets so far this year, compared to 67 deaths at the same time last year, according to Kansas City police data.
