NFL’s researcher unearths stat that puts Patrick Mahomes in category by himself

The Chiefs had the Chargers just where they wanted them Sunday when Los Angeles took a 10-point lead.

Sounds strange, right? But CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz noted during Sunday’s broadcast that with the Chiefs’ 17-10 victory over the Chargers, KC now has won its last 12 games when trailing by exactly 10 points.

That includes the three Super Bowl championships won by the Chiefs during the Mahomes era.

Tony Holzman-Escareno, a senior researcher for the NFL, unearthed this gem of a stat that he shared in an X post: “Patrick Mahomes is 13-12 in games his team trailed by 10+ points, the only QB with a winning record in such situations since at least 1950 (minimum 10 starts).

“For context, Tom Brady was 36-61 in games his team trailed (by) 10+ points.”

A fan noted that included a 3-1 record in Super Bowl games, and Holzman-Escareno said the stat is insane.

Former ESPN “SportsCenter” anchor Trey Wingo wrote in an X post that the Chiefs just know how to win.

Here are three other stats of note to come from Sunday’s game.

    1. Passing Dawson

Mahomes’ 29 pass attempts gave him 3,711 in his career, which moved him past Dawson (3,696) for the most pass attempts in franchise history, the Chiefs said.

    1. 3,711, Patrick Mahomes (2017-24)

    2. 3,696, Len Dawson (1962-75)

    3. 2,777, Trent Green (2001-06)

    4. 2,436, Alex Smith (2013-17)

    2. Moving up

Although Mahomes played in just one game his rookie season, he has with 29,328 passing yards. That’s the ninth most in a player’s first eight years in the NFL, the Chiefs noted.

    1. 33,189, Peyton Manning (128 games)

    2. 32,757, Matt Ryan (126 games)

    3. 31,700, Derek Carr (127 games)

    4. 31,416, Dan Marino (119 games)

    5. 30,429, Jared Goff (117 games)

    6. 30,303, Matthew Stafford (109 games)

    7. 29,734, Russell Wilson (128 games)

    8. 29,459, Dak Prescott (114 games)

    9. 29,328, Patrick Mahomes (100 games)

    10. 29,257, Drew Bledsoe (122 games)

    3. Look out Russ

Mahomes threw a touchdown pass Sunday, giving him 225 for his career, the fourth-most by a quarterback in his first eight seasons. He’s closing in on the Steelers’ Russell Wilson.

    1. 244 Peyton Manning (128 games)

    2. 241 Dan Marino (119 games)

    3. 227 Russell Wilson (128 games)

    4. 225 Patrick Mahomes (100 games)

    5. 213 Brett Favre (113 games)
