A Lee’s Summit man faces nine felony counts in a domestic violence assault that led to the carjacking and kidnapping of an Amazon delivery driver and shots being fired at police during a chase that followed, according to court documents.

The Clay County Prosecutor has charged William Robinson with two counts of first-degree assault, one count of kidnapping, three counts of armed criminal action, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm, and two counts of illegal use of a weapon for firing at two police officers and firing shots from the Amazon delivery vehicle.

Robinson was held in Clay County jail on a $5 million bond. A bond hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday.

According to court documents, the crimes began Friday night with a domestic violence assault of a mother and daughter in a home in the 8800 block of Northeast 110th Street in the Somerbrook neighborhood of Kansas City, North.

The daughter told police that she had just gotten out of the shower when she heard her mother scream for help. The daughter grabbed a baseball bat and went into her mother’s bedroom. The daughter told police that Robinson, who was her mother’s boyfriend, was allegedly striking her mother with his fist.

The daughter tried to stop Robinson, but he grabbed the bat and allegedly struck the daughter in the back of the head with it, causing her to become dizzy and fall to the ground, according to court documents. Robinson allegedly struck her mother in the head several times with the bat.

The daughter ran from the house, screaming for help. By the time Kansas City police arrived , Robinson had fled. Mother and daughter were taken to the hospital. The mother had a fractured skull and a brain breed, according to court documents, and was critically injured. The daughter had an injury to her face and head, but was released after being treated.

Officers were told that Robinson fled northbound armed with a handgun. They searched the area for him, and shortly after 7:20 p.m., an officer spotted him near Northeast 116th Street and North Stark Avenue. When the officer turned on the emergency lights of his police vehicle, Robinson allegedly pulled a handgun from his pocket and pointed it at his head.

The officer exited his vehicle, and Robinson ran east through the backyard of a house. Robinson then allegedly fired three shots at the officer and his backup, who were chasing him. After taking cover, the officers went to the front of the house. According to court documents, Robinson was gone, but a witness told them Robinson had allegedly fled in an Amazon delivery truck.

    ‘Drive,’ Amazon driver told

The delivery driver, who had worked for Amazon for about a week, told police he had just made his last delivery of the day and was parked on the street, according to court documents.

He heard a gunshot but didn’t think anything of it. Robinson then allegedly entered the front passenger side of the van, allegedly pointed a handgun at the delivery driver’s head and told him to “drive.”

Robinson allegedly pressed the gun to the worker’s side, holding him hostage while telling him to leave the area. The driver told police that after exiting the neighborhood, he saw police vehicles but continued driving out of fear of being shot.

Officers spotted the Amazon van heading south on Stark and pursued it. An on-call tactical officer was monitoring the radio traffic when he heard officers being shot at. The officer responded to the area and joined the pursuit at North Flintlock Road as the Amazon van headed east on Northeast Cookingham Drive/Missouri 291 highway.

Clay County Sheriff deputies also joined in the pursuit of the Amazon van. As the chase neared Interstate 35, the tactical officer attempted a maneuver to spin the Amazon van to cause the driver to lose control, but was unsuccessful. The Amazon van sped south on I-35. Robinson allegedly fired shots at the pursuing officers.

Liberty police then deployed devices that deflated the van’s tires, disabling it. The van came to a stop just north of Pleasant Valley Road. Robinson ran from the van, and the kidnapped driver — who was unharmed — was taken to safety by deputies.

Police and deputies ran after the suspect. A deputy found him by some homes in the 9100 block of Northeast 73rd Street. According to the sheriff’s office, he was taken into custody and turned over to Kansas City police.

When questioned by detectives, Robinson allegedly told them he was arguing with his girlfriend when her daughter entered the room and hit him in the head with a bat. He said that as he was taking the bat away from the daughter, his girlfriend attempted to get a gun from her purse, and he allegedly said that’s why he hit her.

Robinson denied assaulting his girlfriend before the daughter entered the room. Robinson also allegedly said he felt bad about shooting at police and for kidnapping the delivery driver.

Robinson allegedly said that “he wasn’t trying to hurt anyone and was just trying to get away from police.”
