    KU Jayhawks claim top preseason Big 12 honors ahead of Oct. 18 Late Night in Phog

    The Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team has been voted No. 1 by Big 12 coaches in the league’s 2024-25 preseason poll, which was released Thursday.

    It’s the 21st time in the 28-year history of the poll that the Jayhawks have earned the honor.

    KU, which next Friday (Oct. 18) hosts its annual Late Night in the Phog season-kickoff event at Allen Fieldhouse , received nine of a possible 15 first-place votes and finished with a total of 215 points.

    Big 12 preseason men’s hoops poll, 2024-25

    Here’s the full poll, with votes and points:

    1. Kansas (9 first-place votes) — 215 points

    2. Houston (5 first-place votes) — 211 points

    3. Iowa State (1) - 194 points

    4. Baylor — 185 points

    5. Arizona (1) — 179 points

    6. Cincinnati - 140 points

    7. Texas Tech — 135 points

    8. Kansas State — 133 points

    9. BYU — 116 points

    10. TCU — 90 points

    11. UCF— 83 points

    12. Arizona State — 64 points

    13. West Virginia - 62 points

    14. Oklahoma State - 46 points

    15. Colorado — 37 points

    16. Utah - 30 points

    KU’s Dickinson headlines individual Big 12 honors

    Also Thursday, KU graduate center Hunter Dickinson was selected as the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

    He’s the first player in league history to earn the accolade twice.

    Dickinson was also a unanimous preseason all-Big 12 first-team selection. Jayhawks teammate Dajuan Harris Jr., a guard, made the second team.

    Here’s a look at the All-Big 12 Preseason teams:

    • Preseason All-Big 12 first team: Caleb Love, Arizona; LJ Cryer, Houston; J’Wan Roberts, Houston; Tamin Lipsey, Iowa State; Hunter Dickinson, Kansas.
    • Preseason All-Big 12 second team: Norchad Omier, Baylor; Jeremy Roach, Baylor; Keshon Gilbert, Iowa State; Dajuan Harris Jr., Kansas; Coleman Hawkins, K-State.

    KU is coming off a 23-11 season that ended with a loss to Gonzaga in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

    More All-Big 12 preseason honors

    Other preseason honors announced Thursday include:

    • Preseason Co-Newcomer of the Year: Jeremy Roach, Baylor
    • Preseason Co-Newcomer of the Year: Coleman Hawkins, K-State
    • Freshman of the Year: VJ Edgecombe, Baylor
