The weather is about to take the Kansas City area on a wild roller coaster ride. Temperatures will be unusually hot before plunging to freezing in just a matter of days.

“Well above normal temperatures will continue today as highs approach daily records,” the National Weather Service said in its Friday forecast discussion.

Temperatures will be around 88 degrees on Friday and 91 degrees on Saturday. Typically, Kansas City sees temperatures reach 69 degrees this time of year.

The unusually hot weather could break the records of 89 degrees on Oct. 11, set in 1962, and 91 degrees on Oct. 12, set in 1899.

Taste of winter weather coming to Kansas City

The weather service said the second part of the weekend will be quite a contrast in weather.

A dry cold front will sink through the area Saturday night, which “will cool temperatures back into the mid-60s to mid-70s,” the weather service said.

In Kansas City, temperatures will be around 72 degrees on Sunday.

Headed into next week, temperatures will fall below average, with highs reaching the upper 50s to mid-60s.

The Kansas City area will get its first taste of winter as temperatures will fall overnight Monday into the 30s. The weather service said this is expected to lead to widespread frost and perhaps the first freeze for some, especially across northern Missouri.

Typically, Kansas City sees its first frost around Oct. 29, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac .

Temperatures will be below normal again on Tuesday, with overnight temperatures dipping into the 30s, bringing another chance for widespread frost.

Warmer weather is expected for the second half of the week.
