Police are investigating after an Independence man found a decomposing body near his property Sunday afternoon.

Police were called out around 4 p.m. to the 3100 block of South Redtail Drive, after a decomposing body was found near the caller’s property, according to Jack Taylor, public information officer with Independence police.

Taylor said in an email on Monday that they don’t know how long the body had been there, but said there was severe decomposition.

The person did not live on or own the nearby property, police said. No identification was found, so they do not yet know the exact age or identity, but police did say the body was that of a male..

The investigation is classified as a death investigation, while police await the medical examiner’s determination on whether foul play was involved in the death.
