A kayaker paddling down a river came across a grim discovery, Michigan police told local news outlets.

A decomposing human torso was tangled within an embankment on the Lower Rouge River in Wayne on Oct. 16, police told WXYZ. The kayaker called authorities upon finding the remains.

More remains were discovered in the river the following day, and Michigan State Police pulled the lower half of the body from the water, police told WDIV.

The lower half of the decomposing body was placed onto a gurney, CBS reported, but police said they were not able to identify the remains at the scene.

The body parts were taken to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office for an investigation, police told the Detroit Free Press.

Wayne is about a 25-mile drive southwest from Detroit.
