Mosquito Control mission set for Thursday, July 11, in Upper Keys
Because of recent rains, the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District has scheduled aerial larviciding missions for Tuesday, July 11, from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., over Upper Key Largo, Middle Key Largo and Upper Matecumbe. The airplane/helicopter mission will be completed, weather permitting, using Bti, which is a mosquito larva-specific soil bacteria. It is mixed with water and applied as a mist to combat Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that can transmit dengue fever, chikungunya and Zika. Mayor addresses Gerald Adams Elementary School students
Key West Mayor Teri Johnston and the staff at Key West City Hall recently hosted a group of second-grade Gerald Adams Elementary School students as part of a visit for summer school. The mayor and city staff have held several events designed to teach civics to local school children. In April, Monroe County Mayor Holly Raschein and Key Mayor Johnston were guest lecturers for professor Kelly Conklin-Penwell’s capstone course at The College of the Florida Keys recently. Mayor Raschein and Mayor Johnston were joined by CFK President and CEO Dr. Jonathan Gueverra for a two-hour lively discussion on leadership and politics.
Discovery Saturdays continue
The popular Discovery Saturday at the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center has returned. The sessions are at 10:30 a.m. one Saturday a month. Discovery Saturday is a free, monthly activity designed for children in grades 1-5. The sessions last from 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the presenter, with new subjects slated each month. The lineup of presenters for 2024 includes FWC Lobster Lab (July 13: Lobsters), Force Blue (Aug. 10: Sea Turtles), National Weather Service (Sept. 21: Hurricanes), Reef Relief (Oct. 19: Marine Ecosystems), Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm (Nov. 9: Responsible Pet Ownership) and Key West Art & Historical Society (Dec. 14: The Whole Key West).
Small plane crashes off Marathon
There were no reported injuries after a small airplane crashed Thursday, July 4, in the Atlantic Ocean, about 200 yards off Sombrero Beach Road in Marathon. Initial reports indicated an adult male and adult female in the aircraft were rescued by boaters, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Adam Linhardt said. There were no reported serious injuries in the crash, which occurred shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday. The Florida Highway Patrol is the investigating agency, Linhardt said.
Expanded rideshare service begins in Islamorada
The village’s rideshare service is now offering longer daily hours due to a new agreement unanimously approved recently by the Islamorada Village Council. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office have formerly filed child sexual battery charges against a father of seven who has already pleaded guilty to federal charges of production and distribution of child pornography.
