    Local Viet Nam Veterans Honored

    King’s Gap Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is celebrating the 50 th anniversary the Viet Nam War by honoring veterans with a Pinning Ceremony and Art Show at Artisans on the Square Gallery in Greenville.

    The Pinning Ceremony was on Saturday April 27   Julia Keating, (Regent of the King’s Gap Chapter NSDAR in Pine Mountain), welcomed everyone and led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, America’s Creed and the National Anthem.  King’s Gap DARlings gave a special musical performance of patriotic songs as well as the Armed Forces Songs Medley. Gay Solomon talked about the significance of the 50th Anniversary.  Gay Solomon, Erma Jean Brown, and Martha Dimon presented Commemorative pins and Certificates of Appreciation to seven local Veterans as a symbol of gratitude and appreciation for their service and sacrifice.  The program concluded with Gary Dawson playing Taps on the saxophone, DARlings singing “God Bless the USA”  and a benediction by Martha Dimon.

    The following Viet Nam Veterans were honored: Sergeant Charles Horton, Greenville, Army 1974-1991; Sergeant Larry Leo Walsh, Greenville, Marine Corps 1969-1975; Chief Petty Officer Joel Shelton, Manchester, Navy 1957-1960, Coast Guard 1960-1978;  Captain Michael D. Tillman MD, Hamilton, Army 1964-1968, Air Force 1985-1993;  Sergeant Earl Wayne Sellers, Greenville, Marine Corps1956-1960;  Hospital Man 3 William G. Jackson, Sharpsburg, Marine Corps 1967-1971; First Sergeant John Emil Lang, Pine Mountain, Army 1963-1985.

    The evening also opened the art exhibit: HONORING VETERANS which will be on display until June 15.  The artwork includes the American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, World Wars I and II and Viet Nam, as well as Patriotic and Military themes.  Featured artists include Vietnam Veteran William Jackson, Sharpsburg; DAR member Erma Jean Brown, her sister Tina Estep and nephew Sergeant Kevin C. Chapman, Woodbury; Martin Pate, Newnan; Shane Williams, Columbus; Robin Robinson, Peachtree City; Carla Snider, Woodbury; Susan Walters, Pine Mountain; Chris Hagebak and Jennifer Emery, LaGrange;  Photographers Lori Harrell, Salem AL, and Becky Jackson, Sharpsburg; and Clay Artist Ned Berry, Columbus.
