Acting Steuben County and Family Court Judge Mathew K. McCarthy recently announced his intention to run for that seat in the upcoming November election.

McCarthy, also a Corning City Court Judge for the past 10 years, said he has presided over thousands of criminal and family court cases, the same types of cases this position will encounter on a daily basis. McCarthy is running for the Steuben County seat being vacated by the retirement of Judge Philip J. Roche.

“With Judge Roche’s retirement, along with the encouragement of many of my peers and those whose livelihood relies on an efficient and fair legal system, I have made the decision to use my nearly 20 years of legal and judicial experience to seek the permanent position of Steuben County and Family Court Judge,” McCarthy said. “My decade of judicial experience has allowed me to serve Steuben County as a sitting Judge in Corning, Hornell and Bath.”

McCarthy said the court system plays a key role in keeping Steuben County and its families safe.

“It is crucial to have a judge with the right experience to navigate the current bail reform and discovery mandates, properly apply complex criminal and family law and who understands and respects the values of our community,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy was elected in 2014 as the full-time Corning City Court Judge and has served in a dual capacity as City Court and Acting County and Family Court Judge since Jan. 1, 2015.

Before his election, McCarthy worked for over nine years as a prosecutor with Steuben County District Attorney’s Office and represented children in Family Court as an Attorney for the Child for over 10 years. He also maintained a private law practice with his father at McCarthy Law in Bath for over 10 years.

McCarthy and his wife, Jolie, are lifelong residents of Steuben County and have lived in Corning for over 20 years. McCarthy is a graduate of Avoca Central School, St. Bonaventure University and Albany Law School.

McCarthy is running on the Republican and Conservative party lines. Corning attorney Michaela Rossettie Azemi is running on the Democratic ticket . The election will be held on Nov. 5, with early voting from Oct. 26 to Nov. 3.
