    Week 2 high school football results in Polk County: Mulberry races to 2-0 start

    The Mulberry Panthers pushed their record to 2-0 thanks to a second straight dominant performance in Week 2 high school football action. The Panthers knocked off Kathleen, 35-14, as Traveon Hymes racked up 13 carries for 175 yards and two rushing touchdowns, while Bryan Mapp had a 30-yard touchdown pass and Lloyd Knight also had a touchdown run; Mapp was 8-for-15 for 165 yards and Knight had 11 carries for 66 yards and 112 yards in kick return yards., including an 88 yarder for a touchdown.

    In all, Mulberry tallied 265 yards on the ground and 430 yards of total offense.

    Defensively, Tayvon Grant produced 10 tackles. And Quinten Meyers and TJ Dobson put up six tackles each.

    “All in all, it was a good night, beating a 7A school. … I was pleased with the kids' efforts. They played hard. They played disciplined. Kids did a good job of controlling their tempers and just playing football,” Mulberry coach Brad Methany said.

    On Kathleen’s side, quarterback Kelin Hendrix threw a touchdown pass to Kalen Mitchell. Hendrix also rushed for a score, too.

    Fort Meade 28, George Jenkins 7

    The Miners took the fight to the Eagles, winning their first game of the year.

    Fort Meade's Jayden Mccutchen racked up four touchdowns — two to Omari Russell, one to Jermaine May and Nasier Berrien.

    “I feel good, got a lot of things to clean up,” Fort Meade coach Maurice Russell said. “We had too many penalties. Got to fix the small things.”

    George Jenkins running back Trevon Evans scored on a 5-yard rushing touchdown.

    Bartow 36, Gulf Coast 21

    Bartow snagged its first win of the year, as quarterback Blake Johnson had three touchdown passes — two of them to Cory Butler. He also had a rushing touchdown.

    Defensively, Tavares Murray had an interception, and a punt return for a touchdown. Decoryian Stanley had a stellar game defensively.

    "It's always great to get the first one of the season," Bartow coach Tyler Eden said. "Proud of how our team responded this week. Got a lot to clean up, but that is very encouraging because we could have performed better in a solid win. Now it's our job to clean up the mistakes as we get ready to face a top 40 team in the state in Bishop Moore in Orlando."

    Lakeland Christian 57, West Oaks Academy 0

    The Vikings won their first game of the year thanks to a blowout win over West Oaks.

    Quarterback DJ Howard registered two passing touchdowns to Trey Berry, while Killian Oneal had two rushing touchdowns and Josh Bellamy, AJ Truedell, Colton Pierce and Jackson Peeples all had a touchdown each.

    “Guys played hard from start to finish. Was good getting some of the younger guys in to get reps also,” head coach Danny Williams said.

    Lake Wales 27, Ridge 8

    Ridge limted Lake Wales to Isaac Rivera's 25-yard field in the first half that put the Highlanders on top 3-0, but Brycen Levitioitis tossed three touchdown passes in the second half that allowed his team to pull away.

    Levitiotis first threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kaneilius Purdy, who then rushed for a 2-point conversion, for the only points of the third quarter.

    Afer Ridge cut Lake Wales' lead to 11-8, Levitiotis and Purdy hooked up again for a 65-yard touchdown pass with about five minutes to play in the game. The Highlanders then added a safety and one more touchdown pass to close out the game.

    Frostproof 14, Hardee 0

    Frostproof moved to 2-1 thanks to a shutout win. Running backs Donte Daniels and Landon Fuller put up a touchdown each.

    "Big win for our program," Frostproof coach Richie Marsh said. "We were exposed last week, and our problems were clear, and the young men showed we are making strides to get better."

    St. Petersburg Catholic 28, Santa Fe Catholic 0

    Santa Fe Catholic lost its first game of the year in shutout fashion.

    “It was a great learning experience for our team,” head football coach Gabe Walker said.
