COLUMBUS GROVE — Lauryn Auchmuty, the recently named unanimous player of the year in the Northwest Conference, celebrated that accomplishment on Tuesday night with a hat trick, leading to Columbus Grove’s 6-0 opening-round win over Ada.
Columbus Grove (15-1-2) scored three times in each half to eliminate Ada and move on to a district semifinal matchup next week with Mansfield Christian, a team that was victorious over Ashland Crestview 7-0 in its sectional final.
The game is set to kick off at 5 p.m. on Monday at Bluffton’s Steinmetz Field.
Ada ended its season with a record of 10-8-0.
On Tuesday, Auchmuy netted the game’s first two goals within seven minutes of one another, the first at the 28:59 mark after receiving a pinpoint pass from Ella Dotson and the second on a chip shot over the head of Ada keeper Emily Gibson with 22:04 left in the half.
Columbus Grove fired 15 shots on goal, nine of which were saved by Gibson.
Ada had just four shots on goal, all saved by Columbus Grove keeper Erianne Heffner.
In the second half, Auchmuty traded places with Dotson, serving a perfectly placed pass into the center of the box which Dotson sent into the back of the net with 36:50 left.
Auchmuty proceeded to sink a left-footed kick at the 31:04 mark to complete the hat trick and Lauryn Halker scored Columbus Grove’s sixth goal just before the final whistle with 3:50 left.
Kenton falls to Bryan
BRYAN — In just under 30 seconds, Kenton grabbed a 2-0 lead over Bryan on Wednesday night midway through the first half of its district quarterfinal matchup, and the Golden Bears wanted to tie it before the break.
They did just that.
Macy Burton scored with 17 seconds left in the first half to make it 2-2 while an Ava Zimmerman goal late in the second half gave Bryan a 3-2 win over the Wildcats at Golden Bear Stadium in Bryan.
“Once they scored that second goal, all I thought was, ‘We need to score two before the half. If we score two before the half, we can win and we have it in the bag,’” said Burton, a senior captain who was battling illness on Wednesday. “I think it really proved that when we work together as a team, great things happen. We score two goals in like 10 minutes. And we definitely had a lot of possession, so it wasn’t too big of a worry.”
Those two scary goals happened in quick succession.
The first came off a Kinze Sprang free kick. Sprang fired her free kick from the right side towards Bryan goalkeeper Mylie Vollmer, who couldn’t corral it on the left side.
Kenton’s Emma Hougendobler was right there for the loose ball and tapped it in to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with 19:05 left in the first half.
Ellie Minter, a freshman forward for the Wildcats, then added to her team’s lead by winning the ball away from Bryan and firing a shot almost directly from the left side, which bounced off a diving Vollmer and into the net to make it 2-0 Kenton with 18:36 remaining in the first half.
“Bryan’s a very good team and we know that they play very good defense — they haven’t allowed very many goals this year (20 entering Wednesday),” Kenton coach Toby Brown said. “So we talked about needing to capitalize on any of the chances that we do get, because we knew it would be limited.”
