LOGAN — A large Hocking County property that for decades was the site of Camp Otterbein, a summer camp run by the United Methodist Church, has been sold for $3.4 million.

According to the Hocking County Auditor’s Office, the transaction involved three parcels of land adding up to 467.32 acres. The camp lists its address as 15779 Cox Road, Logan. Formerly owned by the West Ohio Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, the property has been sold to Alan L., Lois M. and Levi R. Miller of Glenmont, Ohio.

Alan L. Miller of Glenmont, Ohio, is listed as an agent of Appalachian Resources, LLC. An attempt to reach him for comment was unsuccessful.

In October 2023, Ideastream Public Media reported that the West Ohio Conference was canceling its residential summer camps for the year because it didn’t have enough staff members to operate safely, and was considering selling Camp Otterbein.

Otterbein was one of three camps owned by the Conference; the other two are Camp Wesley near Bellefontaine, and Camp Widewater outside Toledo.

Ideastream reported that all three camps were seeing declining enrollment and losing money, with Otterbein alone showing an operating loss of over $200,000 in 2021.

The sale of the site was brokered by Brian Bauer, of Mossy Oak Properties.
