LOGAN — The Logan Hocking County District Library provides programs for all ages that make reading fun. One of their biggest programs is the Summer Reading Program (SRP).

In the past, this program has been prepared for students entering K-12. This year the library is adding an adult reading challenge, and are also encouraging parents of preschoolers to register their child and commit to reading to them, so kids of all ages can participate.

The theme of the program is Adventure Begins at Your Library, and weekly programs and activities will center around a destination. Registration is required, and everyone participating in the reading challenge will receive a passport to track the required reading goals for their age group, in addition to a goodie bag (while supplies last).

When kids through grade 12 meet the weekly goal of reading, or being read to, for 100 minutes per week during the eight-week program, they will visit the library, get their passport stamped, and receive a prize. For the new adult program, participants will also visit the library and get their passport stamped. However, instead of a weekly prize, each adult will receive one ticket for every book read each week (up to five books per week). Participants will submit these tickets for a chance to win one of four large gift baskets. Tickets will be collected through Aug. 2 at 4 p.m., and the drawing will take place at 4:30 p.m.

In addition to the reading challenge, the library will have a family program every Wednesday in June and July (excluding the week that contains the July 4 holiday). They start at 10 a.m. at the Main Branch located at 230 E. Main Street, Logan, and at 1 p.m. at the Laurelville Branch. This year’s programs include:

    June 5: The Spoon Man

    June 12: Tie Dye

    June 19: The Great Randini

June 26: Land & Sea (Logan)/Bottle Rockets (Laurelville)

    July 10: River City Puppets

July 17: Draw Along with Jeff Nicholas

July 24: Science Heroes: Adventure of the Lost Treasure

July 31: And Owl Encounter presented by the Ohio School of Falconry

But wait, there’s more! The library is also participating in the Summer Meals Program sponsored by HAPCAP, which provides a free lunch for kids under 18. At the Main Branch in Logan, lunch will be served at 11 a.m.–noon, Monday–Friday. At Laurelville, it will be served at noon on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The library has many more activities and events planned throughout the year. Please visit their website at loganhockinglibrary.org to discover all of the opportunities the library has for you!
