Senior Farmers' Market Program continuing to accept applications

    2024-08-31

Buckeye Hills Regional Council has received a new wave of funding for the popular Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, which helps eligible older adults in southeast Ohio access fresh, nutritious produce throughout the summer and fall months.

“Historically, we have experienced waitlists for the Senior Farmers’ Market Program. This summer, we still have room for new enrollees, and we want to ensure that all those who want to participate know that the program is available,” stated Jennifer Westfall, aging and disability director at Buckeye Hills Regional Council.

The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program is a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Ohio Department of Aging to allow income-eligible seniors the opportunity to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables from participating farmers’ markets and roadside stands. Participants receive ten $5 coupons that can be exchanged for fresh produce through October.

You are eligible for the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program if:

    • You are age 60 or older,

    • You live in Athens, Hocking, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Noble, Perry, or Washington County.

    • You have a household income that falls within certain guidelines.

Individuals interested in participating in the program are encouraged to visit www.buckeyehills.org/sfmnp to access the mail-in form or apply online. Each application lists the income guidelines based on household size. Applicants may also call Buckeye Hills Regional Council at 1-800-331-2644 Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
