Judge dismisses part of press freedom lawsuit against Pike County sheriff
COLUMBUS — A federal judge has thrown out much of an online news outlet’s press freedom lawsuit against the Pike County Sheriff’s Office. He has narrowed the main focus of the suit to the question of whether the agency had probable cause to arrest the outlet’s editor, after he published an article based on an illegally obtained recording of witness testimony in a murder trial. In an opinion and order filed June 27, U.S. District Judge Michael H. Watson granted a request by the sheriff’s...
OU researchers find way to make essential biotesting more accessible
ATHENS, Ohio — Lateral flow assay test kit is a term most people might not recognize. Lateral flow testing technology has been around for decades, but only recently received widespread use and attention during the coronavirus pandemic in the form of COVID-19 tests. A large part of what makes most lateral flow assay (LFA) tests function is gold. Colloidal gold nanoparticles have a red appearance and make up the red lines that indicate whether a test is positive or negative. The pandemic demonstrated the necessity...

In February 2022 Serah Bellar, who would now be 20 years old, filed suit in U.S. District Court against defendants including Athens County; a former Athens County sheriff’s deputy; her parents,...
Pastor’s Corner: Independence Day
For many of us July 4th and Independence Day hold special memories. Sparklers, fireworks, firecrackers (especially as a teenager; OK, maybe as an adult male too. There is just something about blowing things up), picnics, swimming, family, friends and of course Red, White and Blue. Well, if you have grown up in central Ohio, it’s Red, White and Boom, or for the southern Ohio Rednecks, Thunder in The Valley. I am confident that there are many images swirling through your mind right now about sweet...

Ohio University’s Russ College awarded $2.25 million contract to train educators
ATHENS, Ohio — There is a large need for U.S. workers with the skills to manage complex technological and business challenges. Many jobs are available in these areas, but fewer people have the diverse skills in engineering and technology, especially in automation and robotics, to meet the demand. A partnership between the U.S. Department of Defense and Ohio University through defense contractor ARCTOS Technology Solutions will help meet this demand by educating the next generation in STEM fields and beyond at the college and high school levels. ...
