Judge dismisses part of press freedom lawsuit against Pike County sheriff
COLUMBUS — A federal judge has thrown out much of an online news outlet’s press freedom lawsuit against the Pike County Sheriff’s Office. He has narrowed the main focus of the suit to the question of whether the agency had probable cause to arrest the outlet’s editor, after he published an article based on an illegally obtained recording of witness testimony in a murder trial. In an opinion and order filed June 27, U.S. District Judge Michael H. Watson granted a request by the sheriff’s...
Pastor’s Corner: Independence Day
For many of us July 4th and Independence Day hold special memories. Sparklers, fireworks, firecrackers (especially as a teenager; OK, maybe as an adult male too. There is just something about blowing things up), picnics, swimming, family, friends and of course Red, White and Blue. Well, if you have grown up in central Ohio, it’s Red, White and Boom, or for the southern Ohio Rednecks, Thunder in The Valley. I am confident that there are many images swirling through your mind right now about sweet...

New area non-profit connects veterans with the healing power of nature
ROSEVILLE — For Jason Maxwell, founder and CEO of Warriors to Wilderness, a southern Ohio non-profit that offers free therapeutic hunting and outdoor experiences to veterans, the first inspiration for the project came from a personal experience. When he retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years, Maxwell had reached the rank of senior chief in the Seabees (combat engineers), and had seen action in Iraq three times and Afghanistan twice. Returning to civilian life and a job with the Department of Defense, he brought...

Ohio University’s Russ College awarded $2.25 million contract to train educators
ATHENS, Ohio — There is a large need for U.S. workers with the skills to manage complex technological and business challenges. A partnership between the U.S. Department of Defense and Ohio University through defense contractor ARCTOS Technology Solutions will help meet this demand by educating the next generation in STEM fields and beyond at the college and high school levels. ...
