Two weather systems are set to play a role in our forecast over the next few days.

First up, a cold front is currently sliding into the area, bringing increased chances of rain and thunderstorms for the rest of the day and into tonight. Expect periods of heavy rain with scattered thunderstorms, some of which could be on the strong side.

Next, Hurricane Helene, now a Category 1 storm, is expected to make landfall along Florida’s Gulf Coast late Thursday, possibly in the Big Bend region. The impacts will begin to be felt in Crenshaw County Thursday afternoon into Thursday night.

According to Elliot Jones, Director of the Crenshaw County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), Crenshaw County is fortunate to be on the far west side of Hurricane Helene, thanks to the cold front that is steering it in a northeastern path. However, we could still experience minor flooding issues in low lying areas along with problematic winds.

“Currently, we anticipate rain and breezy conditions, with occasional wind gusts potentially reaching 30 mph,” Jones said. “Our office will keep a close eye on the situation and will inform the public of any significant updates. If anyone needs assistance, please feel free to contact us via our social media, by calling our office at 334-335-4538 or by calling or texting my personal cell at 334-508-2434.”

While the exact effects on our area aren’t fully clear yet, forecasts will become more accurate as the storm approaches. Helene is fast-moving, so expect waves of showers and storms as she nears the coast. Follow The Luverne Journal Facebook page and the Crenshaw County EMA page for updates.
