    Cowboys, Cowgirls host district finals this week

    Three Crook County Cowboys have made the quarterfinals in the final 8 in the Special District 4 tennis tournament and will be shooting for spots in the state tournament on their home courts Thursday and Friday.

    The opening rounds of the district tournament were held in Richland, Washington. The quarterfinals, semi and finals will be at Crook County High School May 17-18. Entrants placing first through third earn a spot in the state tournament.

    No. 1 Cowboy singles player Victor Covarrubias lost just four games in two matches and will face Umatilla’s Jack Murray in his semi matchup.

    Jamie Acunas also made the final 8, only losing two games in two matches. Acunas faces Shalom Mendoza of Riverside in his opening match Friday. Marcos Munoz is the third Cowboy to reach the singles quarterfinal stage. Munoz will first face Madras No. 1 single player Fernando Saldana.

    Three Crook County doubles teams have advanced: Iker Layunta and Alvaro Coca; Evan Wood and Gregory Hubble; and Hoyt Kudlac and Caleb Decker

    The Cowgirls’ No. 1 singles player, Sami Ramos, didn’t lose a game in winning three 6-0, 6-0 matches to reach the final 8. She’ll face Shae Wyland of Sisters in a quarterfinal match.

    Callie Winebarger dropped Condon’s Theresa Campbell 6-2, 6-3 to reach the third round and advance into the final 8 as well.

    Kristianna Boyum of Crook County took Madras No. 1 player Mia Mitchell to the limit before falling in a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 battle. Kim Cordero Cruz also reached the third round before falling in a 6-2, 6-0 game to Katie Ryan of Sisters. Four Sisters singles players are in the final 8.

    The Crook County doubles team of Delaney Engstrom and Haven Housely have reached the quarterfinals. They beat a Madras duo in the first round 6-3, 6-2 then beat Irrigon’s Jazmin Meza and Lesly Martinez in the quarterfinals 6-3, 7-5. They’ll face Jolene Serrano and Kelly Doherty of Ione-Heppner in the semis.
