Maine Principals Association Revises Gender Identity Policy for Student Athletes

    2024-05-16

The Maine Principals Association has revised its handbook policy on the gender identity participation policy for interscholastic athletics. The Maine Principals Association said they are committed to providing all students with equal opportunity to participate in athletics regardless of sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity. This new policy has been adopted for students whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned to them at birth.

The new policy will require the student to declare their gender identity to their school member if their gender identity is different from the student's assigned sex at birth. The member school will have the sole authority to verify the student's gender identity assignment for athletic registration purposes and to participate in Maine Principals Association-sponsored events. No medical records or official documents will be requested or required.

According to the new policy, a transgender student will be eligible to participate according to the policy based on either their birth sex or their gender identity, but not both. Non-binary students may select the gendered team on which they feel most comfortable participating.
