Park Rangers at Acadia National Park in Maine received a report and photos of two males and one female hiking up Precipice Trail at 11:06 a.m. on July 24, 2024. The trail was marked as being off-limits to hikers because of the nesting peregrine falcons. The trail is closed every year for several months to protect the peregrine falcons. Acadia says most of the east face of Champlain Mountain, including the entirety of the Precipice Trail, is closed for several months every year to support the protection of peregrine falcons, their nesting sites, and surrounding habitat. Peregrine falcons are a federally protected species under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (16 U.S.C. §§703–712).

Acadia National Park publishes the closures not only on the park's website but also on its social media pages. The trail site is also clearly marked as closed, yet these three individuals went around the barricades and onto the trail. A park visitor spotted the individuals violating the park closure, took photos of the individuals, and immediately reported the incident to Acadia Park Rangers. Acadia Park Rangers posted the photos on their social media pages and asked the public to help them identify the individuals involved in the incident.

Acadia National Park announced on Saturday, August 3, 2024, that they had identified the individuals in the photos and were not releasing the names of the individuals at this time.
