The small town of Mexico, Maine, is located in Oxford County and has a town police force. On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, Mexico Chief of Police Roy C. Hodsdon put out an announcement that the police department was going to close on August 20, 2024, at 6:00 a.m.

Chief Hodsdon said the decision to close the police department was not an easy one, and it was due to a shortage of officers to fill the positions. Chief Hodsdon said this has been an ongoing issue since 2020, and there is a very limited pool of interested candidates available to fill law enforcement positions around the state.

This is not just a problem in Maine but all over the country as police departments struggle to fill open positions and police officers are choosing to either retire or just walk away from law enforcement, said Chief Hodson.

Protocols are in place that will require the Oxford County Sheriff's Department to answer the service calls for the town of Mexico.

There will be an informational meeting for town of Mexico residents to discuss this issue on August 13, 2024, from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m.
