2024 Maine Fall Foliage Season Begins!

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry (DACF) announced the start of the fall foliage season in Maine with the release of the first fall foliage report for 2024 on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

The weekly foliage reports first started back in 1959 and have continued for 65 years as a source for leaf peepers visiting the state to check out the colorful fall foliage around the state of Maine.

Maine has seven foliage zones, and the DACF monitors the color change and the leaf drop for each of the foliage zones and reports it in the weekly foliage report. The report comes out each Wednesday, and you can sign up for a weekly email of the report.

The color starts in Northern Maine, zones 6 and 7, and peeks on average around the last week of September into the first week of October.

According to Aaron Bergdahl, a forest pathologist with DACF, "The growing season of 2024 has been excellent for trees, supporting tree health and resilience that should lead to brilliant fall colors throughout Maine."
