Juvenile intake for Riley County has increased

Riley County community corrections saw nearly twice the number of juvenile intakes in July as it did in June.

Community corrections interim director Megan Lewis on Monday told Riley County commissioners her department had 10 more juvenile intakes in July.

“We had 25 intakes in Riley County and two in Clay County for a total of 27,” Lewis said. “If you look before, in the month of June, we had a total of 15.”

Eight of the July juvenile intakes in Riley County were for juvenile offenders, while 16 were child-in-need-of-care cases, and one was for a status offender. The two Clay County cases were for juvenile offender.

Of the 27 July cases in the two counties, 10 of the kids returned to a parent or guardian, nine were released to the Department of Children and Families, three were placed with a relative, three went to detention, and two were placed in a protective home.

Lewis said the increase of juvenile intakes means community corrections staff members are on the clock for more time. In July, on-call juvenile intake officers logged 58 hours of work.

Carryover funds cover the cost for board, supplies and meals for juveniles.

The Riley County commissioners approved the fiscal year 2025 juvenile services carryover reimbursement budget in the amount of $16,318, as presented.

    Hohman Road to close Wednesday

Also on Monday, Riley County public works director John Ellerman told county commissioners Hohman Road will close Wednesday for construction.

“We’re closed for the day to replace a crossroad pipe north of Fairview Church Road,” Hohman said.

The one-day closure will include the stretch of Hohman Road between University Park Road to Fairview Church Road.

Ellerman also said the transfer station will be closed Sept. 2.
