Maine: July Breaks Monthly Marijuana Sales Record With $22.8 Million Spent Across 424,941 Transactions

Marijuana sales in Maine reached a new monthly record in July, with a total of $22,861,337 in sales across 424,941 transactions.

This surpasses the previous month’s total and sets a new benchmark for the state’s cannabis industry, topping the previous record of $21.7 million sold in August 2023.

According to the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy, the average price per gram of dried marijuana in July was $7.20, a decrease of $0.05 from June’s average, and $0.02 higher than the all-time low of $7.18 set in April of this year.

The year-to-date total is now $137,910,538 from 2.5 million transactions. The average price per gram of dried marijuana for the year as a whole is $7.28.

In Maine, recreational marijuana was legalized in 2016, allowing individuals aged 21 and over to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana. These can be purchased from licensed retail outlets, though the first store did not open until 2020 due to bureaucratic delays. Sales of recreational marijuana are subject to a 5.5% tax, with an additional 8% excise tax on marijuana-infused edibles, while medical marijuana sales are tax-free.

In May, it was announced that Maine will implement new marijuana regulations, aligning retail outlets more closely with liquor stores. These changes include eliminating ID checks at store entrances, allowing minors to enter with their legal guardians, and permitting product samples.

Additionally, in April, Maine Governor Janet Mills signed into law a bill allowing those with convictions for possessing or cultivating marijuana to have these charges sealed from their criminal records.
