Canada: $440 Million in Legal Marijuana Sold in July, Most Since December

According to data compiled and released by Statistics Canada, there was over $440 million worth of marijuana sold legally in July.

In total, there was $440.7 million in worth of marijuana and marijuana products sold in July throughout Canada. This is the highest monthly total since the $448 million sold in December 2023.

Although July’s sales are the highest so far this year, they are around $18 million less than the total for July 2023.

The year-to-date total for marijuana sales in Canada is now just shy of $2.9 billion.

Ontario by far had the most marijuana sales of any province in July, with $164 million. Alberta was second with $82 million, followed by Quebec at $64 million and British Columbia at $62 million.

Canada legalized marijuana in 2018 through its parliament, via legislation proposed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Under the law those 18 and older can purchase and possess up to 30 grams of marijuana and up to 10 grams of marijuana concentrates. They are also allowed to cultivate up to four marijuana plants for personal use.

Throughout Canada, there are now around 4,000 licensed marijuana stores. Marijuana receives an excise tax which is added prior to marijuana products reaching consumers. Consumers must also pay a sales tax, which ranges from 5% to 15% depending on the province. Marijuana flower and pre-rolls are taxed at either a flat rate of 1 Canadian dollar (CA$0.72) per gram or 10% of the gram’s wholesale price, whichever is greater.
