Several local fire-based emergency medical services agencies came together this week for advanced training in risk management and documentation, including Marion City, Marion Township and Pleasant Township.

A mock trial was conducted in which an emergency medical technician on the witness stand answered questions about a real-life scenario concerning a non-transport. A non-transport is a situation where 911 is called, and EMS responds, but ultimately the patient refuses to go to the hospital.

Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan served as the plaintiff’s counsel while local lawyer Todd Anderson served as the defense counsel.

A non-transport is one of several high-risk situations faced by EMS where documentation is critical as well as adherence to their operating protocol. Dr. Brandon Forbes, EMS medical director for Marion County, highlighted the importance of not only great patient care but also accurate and complete documentation.

The training was scheduled to take place Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to cover all three EMT shifts.
