The 2024 high school football season opened with a flourish. It featured nail biters and blowouts .
But who had the strongest start to the season? We picked 15 candidates for the Daily News Week 1A Football Player of the Week. Here's more about our candidates:
Jake Attaway, Hudson
The senior quarterback completed 12-of-16 passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns, including the 100th total touchdown of his career, in a 41-14 win over Shrewsbury. He also ran for 166 yards on 12 carries.
Jake Broggi, Wellesley
The sophomore contributed two rushing touchdowns and a sack in a 41-0 win over Framingham. He carried the ball eight times for 43 yards and contributed four tackles, two for a loss.
Jack Buckley, Milford
He threw for three touchdowns, as the Scarlet Hawks opened their season with a 35-6 win at Westfield.
Karson Cournoyer, Blackstone-Millville/Hopedale
He intercepted two passes in the second half and played quarterback in the fourth quarter of a 35-0 loss against Bellingham.
Gabe Egan, Bellingham
The senior running back broke out with 160 yards and a touchdown on the ground. That included a dazzling 70-yard burst where he showed power and elusiveness. The Blackhawks beat BMR 35-0 in their season opener.
Max Gamble, Bellingham
The senior Swiss Army knife caught three passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 40 yards and a score and recovered a fumble in the 35-0 win over BMR.

Sam Hubbard & Jesse Shaugnessey, Natick
They each ran for more than 100 yards and scored a touchdown in the Redhawks' win over Newton North.
Treson Meuse, Hudson
He carried the ball nine times for 78 yards and a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass in the 41-14 win over Shrewsbury.
Nick O’Brien, Tri-County
He ran the ball 14 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-22 win over Cape Cod Tech. O’Brien also caught a 65-yard touchdown pass and returned an interception for 43 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory.
Lukas Prock, Wellesley
In his first varsity start, the sophomore threw and ran for a touchdown in a 41-0 win over Framingham. Prock completed 4-of-7 passes for 73 yards and ran for an additional 46 yards.

Andrew Rivera, Milford
He found the end zone three times for the Scarlet Hawks in their 35-6 win over Westfield. Rivera caught two 30-plus yard touchdown passes and ran for a two-yard score.
Jack Showstead, Natick
He ran for two scores, as the Redhawks opened with a 36-5 win over Newton North.

Jack Smelstor, Bellingham
He grabbed two interceptions for the Blackhawks in a 35-0 win against BMR and made a tackle.
Matt Tasker, Lincoln-Sudbury
He ran for 96 yards on just 12 carries and a first-quarter touchdown in a 42-14 loss against Methuen.
Will Tirrell, Franklin
The senior quarterback ran for 58 yards and a key second-half touchdown for the Panthers. He also completed 2-of-3 passes for 42 yards and was a key member of Franklin's defense at corner for the entire game.
