Dual threat running game powers Wayland football to 1st win against LS since 2018

SUDBURY - Michael Caulfield gets the best view of a long Max Dresens touchdown run . Right after he cracks the defensive end with a block, all Caulfield can see are Dresens' orange numbers and the bottom of his shoes.

"I love blocking for him," Caulfield said. "I love watching it."

Wayland's dynamic running back duo gave each other plenty to see in a 28-7 win over Lincoln-Sudbury on Thursday. They each found the end zone twice. Dresens, who will play at Bucknell next year, carried the ball 14 times for 190 yards. Caulfield gained 65 yards on just 10 carries.

"I love blocking for him, too," Dresens said. "We've been playing together since my freshman year, his eighth grade year, to be still playing together three years later is just great."

Dresens opened the scoring with a 5-yard run midway through the second quarter. He flattened a defender crossing the goal line to finish a seven-play drive. After Wayland (4-1) forced a punt, Dresens carried the ball twice: a three-yard gain then a 67-yard burst through open field up the right sideline with 3:24 until halftime.

"He puts the team on his back time and time again. He runs hard," Wayland coach Scott Parseghian said. "Everything you want from him."

Wayland's Jaden Kaufman prevented L-S (1-4) from answering the score with a sack that forced a fumble on the next possession that he also recovered to send the Wayland Warriors to the locker room with a 14-0 lead.

Wayland received the second half kickoff then marched 95 over nine plays before Caulfield punched in a 1-yard score with 5:51 left in the third. He opened the fourth with another touchdown, avoiding tackles and tiptoeing up the sideline from 15 yards out.

L-S quarterback Mason Tarantino led a touchdown drive on the team's final possession and burrowed into the end zone with 1:30 remaining.

It was Wayland's first win over L-S since 2018. The Wayland Warriors also bounced back from a shutout against Shawsheen Tech last week.

"To have a win like this, it shows us we're a team that can go far," Dresens said.
