Girl, 4, rescued from hot car as mom shopped in Walmart in 90°F Florida heat

A girl was rescued from a hot car after being left alone in the vehicle in 90°F temperatures while her mother shopped at Walmart.

Authorities took the four-year-old to safety from the SUV in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Florida last Sunday. Temperatures reached 90°F.

Bodycam footage shows a police officer holding the child in his arms as the car alarm rings. Witnesses said the girl screamed from a cracked window of the car amid the scorching temperatures . No windows were broken during the rescue.

Miami-Dade police said the girl's mother spent around 30 minutes in the store while she was unattended in the car. Police said the girl's mother will not be prosecuted.

Police arrested her and initially charged her with child neglect . However, prosecutors said there wasn’t enough evidence to pursue the case and the girl was not harmed.

Broward Assistant State Attorney Melissa Kelly said: “While the defendant’s conduct is irresponsible, it does not rise to the egregious level of conduct necessary to show culpable negligence. This was a single isolated incident of what may be deemed poor parental judgment that resulted in the defendant’s arrest on Felony Child Neglect charges.”

At least 10 children have died after being left alone in hot cars in the US this year. A father from Arizona was charged with murder after leaving his two-year-old daughter in a car while he was distracted by a PlayStation in 120°F heat.

A two-year-old boy died in New York and an eight-week-old baby also died in New Jersey in separate hot-car incidents this month.
