Jeopardy! fans couldn't contain their excitement as James Holzhauer and Mattea Roach met up for a surprise reunion.

The unexpected pairing met up over the weekend, with 40-year-old James sharing a snap of the encounter on X, formerly known as Twitter . "OMG YOU GUYS I JUST MET A JEOPARDY LEGEND," he wrote.

While fans were loving the picture, plenty of people flooded the comments to issue a correction to James . One person wrote: "Two Jeopardy legends in one pic!" while another agreed: "You are both Jeopardy Legends!"

A third fan commented: "Icons being icons." Someone else gushed: "I should be so fortunate; love watching you both!! Truly amazing!" Another fan said James and Mattea were their "two favorite champions".

A sixth fan said: "TWO legends, actually!!" James returned to the Jeopardy! franchise in May when he took part in Jeopardy Masters.

Mattea and Matt Amodio were knocked out of the tournament after finishing in fifth and sixth place respectively. Only four players were left before the semi-finals - James, Victoria Groce, Amy Schneider and Yogesh Raut.

James went into the semi-final in third place, with Yogesh in second place and Victoria in first. Fans had speculated that James thought the competition would be easy as the announcer introduced him as "the self-described Final Boss of Jeopardy!".

However, he spent most of the tournament in third place. Viewers speculated his struggles were related to his connection to Victoria outside of the show, as they are both Chasers on the hit ABC show The Chase.

"I'm a James fan, but he’s struggling against Victoria," one person wrote on Facebook. Another agreed: "He's clearly been frustrated." A third viewer suggested: "Since he's known her outside Jeopardy, it probably gets to him a different way."
