What do you do when a family member is pronouncing their own son’s name wrong? That was the case with one woman on Reddit . She shared that her family is Irish, but she has a few cousins in England, including one named Liam .

She’s now in England for university with a 3-year-old son, and she’s only an hour away from where Liam lives. The cousins recently decided to meet up so her son could meet his son, named Oisin.

The woman explained that Oisin is “an Irish name that is meant to be pronounced like ‘oh sheen,’ in accordance with the old Gaelic tradition of nothing being pronounced like it's spelled.”

She’s met Liam a few times when they were kids. Since being an adult, however, they’ve only texted. That means she’s never heard how Liam pronounces his son’s name – she ‘s only seen it spelled out in text.

“We went to the park, we met up with them, and I said "this must be Oisin".”

Liam asked her why she pronounced it “oh sheen,” which confused her. He then clarified it’s supposed to be said like “oi sin,” similar to how one would pronounce “hoisin” sauce.

At first, she decided not to say anything because she didn’t want to come off as a know-it-all. Her son’s name is also very Irish, which prompted Liam to say he was surprised she mispronounced Oisin so badly.

She replied by saying, “I’m not the one mispronouncing it.”

“They asked what I meant by that and I said it's an Irish name, it's pronounced ‘oh sheen’ and ‘oi sin’ is probably just a result of the Irish language tricking people.

“Liam said it's how his parents pronounce it, and I said ‘your parents with English accents?’”

Things were tense after that, and the cousins parted ways. She later got a call from Liam’s parents, her aunt and uncle, telling her to apologize. Liam’s wife is now convinced they’ve been pronouncing their son’s name wrong.

In the replies, people said one Google search reveals she has the correct pronunciation.

One said: “You can literally Google how to pronounce Oisin, and there are videos of it. They didn’t do their due diligence before naming their child to even verify pronunciation. That’s their problem.”

Another wrote: “As an Irish person, I am finding this very comical.”
