The hunt for an "armed and dangerous " killer is frantically underway after an 83-year-old man was killed in a deadly shooting near a popular store chain in Santa Fe, New Mexico .

The Santa Fe police were called to the area of the Best Buy at 3533 Zafarano Drive on Tuesday morning after reports of the deadly incident. When they arrived, they reportedly found Gordan Peter Wilson, 83, shot in the parking lot of the store.

The suspect then reportedly stole the victim's 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, blue in color, with New Mexico license plate number CRM142.

They then fled the scene before officers arrived at approximately 10:26 a.m. that fateful morning. Matthew Champlin, the deputy police chief, told KRQE that there wasn't an immediate connection discovered between Wilson and the suspect as the investigation got underway.

"Initial indication are this horrific act appears to be a crime of opportunity by the suspect," he told the station in an email. The police described the suspect as being a Hispanic male with a goatee and tattoos on his arms. He may have been wearing black jeans, a bright blue shirt with a button-up shirt underneath and a white baseball cap.

He's considered "armed and dangerous," the police said as they asked people not to approach the suspect and instead to call 911 if they see him. No further information about the case or the investigation was immediately available.

Security camera footage shows the suspect at the store, seemingly walking around the parking lot. He doesn't appear to have a gun in the grainy images, though it may have been concealed.

"Santa Fe Police have all of their available resources right now working around the clock to apprehend this suspect, and investigators are following up on just any lead that we have right now," Regina Ruiz, the communications director for the City of Santa Fe, told KRQE.

The station noted that residents in the area are now on edge with Wilson's killer still on the loose. His murder comes just weeks after a 20-year-old was shot while working at a Sonic drive-thru elsewhere in the city. That suspect was caught. Wilson's murder investigation, however, is ongoing.
