Burning Man makes historic move ahead ahead of Nevada event as desert faces closures

For folks interested in Burning Man, set in the Nevada desert, tickets are still available less than three weeks before the annual event.

In an unusual move and for the first time, organizers have put in place a new move to sell tickets ahead of the festival. People interested in becoming Burners can still buy tickets through OMG Ticket Sale even if they haven't pre-registered, which is different from previous years. The week-long event starts on August 25 and ends September 2. Tickets begin at $575 before taxes and fees.

“Experiencing the awe, inspiration, creativity, and community of Burning Man in Black Rock City is the antidote to today’s societal division and polarization," said CEO of Burning Man Project's Marian Goodell in a press release.

“We are pleased to have fulfilled demand for our earlier sales and be in a position to offer greater access to more people as the event nears. This ticket sale is an exciting opportunity to connect more people interested in Burning Man and the arts and culture,” he added in explanation.

According to their website, Burning Man "is not a festival" (although some people disagree) but "a community and global cultural movement guided by 10 practical Principles ." It happens yearly at Black Rock desert where a temporary city called Black Rock City is constructed in Nevada. Last year, Burning Man had some difficulties last year due to unseasonable weather. There was so much heavy rain that led to flooding and terrible conditions on the playa.

Throughout the week, Attendees dealt with water shortage warnings, damaged roads, unclean toilets and some were left stranded. Many attendees shared their experience of the disaster such as music producer Diplo. Diplo had shared footage of himself and actor Chris Rock in the back of a truck of a fan who picked them up as they walked five miles in the mud away from the event.

Although, it was not confirmed that last years's troubles is the reason for new ticket sales policy. Organizers, on the hand said the sale “encourages immediacy and makes it easy for more people to participate in the nonprofit’s signature annual gathering.”

During this upcoming Burning Man, there will be temporary closures on the playa which will affect the land surrounding the site where Burning Man takes place. The Bureau of Land Management are enacting these temporary closures to protect public resources and public safety in the desert.

The closures will be implemented in two phases. Phase 1 covers about 9,941 acres, or less than three percent of the Black Rock Desert playa while Phase 2 covers nearly 51,149 acres, or 33 percent of the Black Rock Desert playa.

The remaining 67 percent on the playa outside of the temporary closure in Phase 2 will remain open to the public to spread out recreational use.

Phase 1 will last for 66 days from July 25 through September 28 and Phase 2 will stay closed for 20 days from August 19 through September 7.
