'I'm banned from family dinners because I laughed at the name my sister is giving her baby'

A woman told a Reddit forum how she was shunned by her family after laughing at the name her sister gave her baby -her sister was outraged, but she doesn't believe it's that serious.

The pregnant woman's sister disclosed what had transpired on Reddit . The post read: “I (28F) attended a family dinner with my mom, dad and sister (26F) yesterday. “My sister is due to give birth soon and decided this dinner would be the perfect time to announce the name she chose for her first child.”

She continued by describing how her sister is highly aesthetic-driven and had used the color "beige" to paint her entire home. Additionally, because "any color gifts for the baby" won't go with her "beige and grey" nursery motif, the pregnant sister declines gifts of any color.

The post continued: “So, we are all done with our dinner, we are looking at my sister as announces her baby will be named.. “Brookleeigh-Willow Rose [insert Surname]. Spelt EXACTLY like that. “And then I burst out laughing, and said 'You cannot be serious?’” The sister added: “I am now banned from all family dinners.

"Is the name really so bad?" Was I truly a huge a*****e?" She asked other Redditors. One person believed the name Brookleeigh sounded similar to a popular veggie. The comment read, "Broccoli? She believes it is an excellent idea to name her child Broccoli-Willow.

"I'm sorry but as a primary school teacher Brookleeigh sounds too close to Broccoli not to be made fun of." Someone responded, "I didn't even consider broccoli. Good shout! "My first thought was more ‘oh hey, another one for r/tragedeigh,’” referencing the Reddit thread where people ask if their name is a tragedy.

One comment read: “Oh sweet dear vegetable, I mean broccoli, I mean Brook..ly? That kid will be laughed about her name behind her back her entire childhood, but hey, mom gets to be unique.”

Another Redditor feared the child would be made fun of when it grows up with this name: "So, is Brookleeigh pronounced Brooke-Lee? Because I guarantee your children will call her broccoli." Another person said, "I probably would have laughed too.

"The unfortunate youngster will spend its entire life explaining and spelling its name. You will most likely be referred to as 'Brook', which will irritate your sister. "Not sure why you are banned from family dinners - did other family think that was a 'great name?’”

Another wrote: “Exactly, is it nice to laugh at a name choice? No of course not. But when someone says something that ridiculous they shouldn’t be surprised that people laugh."

“It’s better that she figures out it’s a daft name now than when there is an actual child to be teased and bullied for it."
