As the 2024 Paris Olympics closing ceremony began, fans couldn't help but laugh at an awkward moment .

A suited and booted Léon Marchand walked through the Tuileries Gardens to the Olympic flame. As the large cauldron flame was extinguished, the swimming sensation picked up a small flame and took it on the way to the Louvre.

However, as the symbolic moment was filmed from a number of different angles, it was clear Marchand wasn't exactly by himself as was supposed to be portrayed - and fans were in their element. Sharing one awkward clip to Twitter /X one user joked: "Don’t worry… no one saw you," with a number of laughing face emojis.

The clip showed Marchand walking alone form an aerial angle. However as the camera panned out, a man in a white shirt, blue shorts and a blue cap was seen "hiding" behind a planted bush. One user commented on the upload: "Haha perfect hidden," while another mocked: "I saw them stuck out like a sore thumb!"

Many others simply shared their delight at the spot with a series of emojis. However, another user was keen to point out the man was actually of importance, revealing he would have been a cameraman for a previous shot. "That's who was filming him in the previous shot," they wrote. "Maybe could have worn a more subtle colour though."

The closing ceremony's sound system was also critiqued from the off, with many hitting out at the echoing. As proceedings got under way, French singer Zaho de Sagazan sang a cover of Sous le ciel de Paris by iconic French artist Edith Piaf. While she performed, fans voiced their concerns over the sound quality .

Throughout the Olympics, viewers at home cheered for their country and favorite athletes to win a gold, silver or bronze medal. Athletes like Simone Biles , Katie Ledecky , Sha'Carri Richardson brought the gold back home for the US and made history. The United States of America and the People's Republic of China dominated the medal tally with numerous victories and gold medals. In the end, the United States won a whopping 126 medals, with 40 being gold.
