Jeopardy! fans fume over 'failure' spinoff, saying they felt irritated after rewatch

Jeopardy! fans are fuming over a spinoff of the show that they have considered as a "failure." While the game show is on hiatus this summer, fans have been catching old episodes of Celebrity Jeopardy! , a spinoff of the beloved show where celebrity contestants compete for a chance to win money for a charity of their choice.

Fans took to Reddit to share their thoughts on the spinoff, under a post in a Jeopardy! subreddit. "So I tried getting my Jeopardy fix by watching Celebrity Jeopardy episodes, and it was a failure. The irritation I kept feeling at the celebs trying to be entertainers and attract attention to themselves outweighed the fun of the game," one fan shared.

The fan then questioned if the game show is attempting to appeal to a different audience who is less interested in the trivia and gameplay and more on the celebrity aspect of it, saying, "The producers are aiming to attract viewers who like some goofy celeb banter."

The post received plenty of responses from fellow fans agreeing with the take. "I never watch any celebrity game shows, for those very reasons. If I'm a fan of the show, it's because I like seeing people play the game," one fan wrote. "If I wanted to see guys cracking jokes, and aping for the camera, I'd watch something else. I watch Jeopardy for the game, and to see the contestants actually try to answer the questions."

One person responded and broke down the difference between the original show and its spinoff. "Just remember, it's aimed at a very different audience. People who love Jeopardy are less likely to enjoy Celebrity Jeopardy. The appeal is quite different," the fan wrote.

"CJ is for people who like celebrities and enjoy the banter. Regular Jeopardy is for people who like the knowledge and competition with a sprinkling of banter and fun. CJ exists to attempt to expand the Jeopardy audience and get people who might not like Jeopardy to give the main show a chance."

However, some responded defending the show. "Asking entertainers to not be entertaining is like asking a dog to meow. Good luck with that," one fan wrote. "If it bothers you that much, remember that no one’s making you watch it."

Season one of Celebrity Jeopardy! debuted in September 2022. Season 2 then followed in September 2023, and Abbott Elementary's Lisa Ann Walter was named champion that season.
