The New York Giants are going all in with their trust in quarterback Daniel Jones by not only deciding to start him in their second preseason game but also opting not to sign a reserve quarterback during the offseason .

While recovering from a torn ACL suffered last year , Jones did not participate in the Giants first preseason game against the Detroit Lions. Drew Lock started in his absence, sharing reps with Tommy DeVito, who captured social media attention with his resonant Italian heritage on full display last year.

The Giants secured a 14-3 victory, primarily relying on their running game. Eric Gray stood out, rushing four times for 52 yards and scoring two touchdowns.

The passing game struggled, with Lock completing just 4 of 10 passes for 17 yards and an interception, while DeVito fared slightly better, completing 8 of 15 passes for 92 yards. The situation became more concerning when Lock, who signed a one-year, $5 million contract with New York in the offseason, was injured in the first quarter after taking a hit that left him visibly in pain.

It was later revealed that Lock had sustained an oblique injury, with an uncertain timeline for his return, though it was not considered a serious injury. As Giants fans speculated about who might serve as the third quarterback on the roster in the interim, head coach Brian Daboll addressed the media, stating that the team would not be searching for another quarterback.

"Because we'll see where Drew is at," Daboll explained. He added that Lock was feeling better than he did immediately after the injury and that his availability for the Giants' next preseason game against the Houston Texans on August 17 would be determined later in the week.

Daboll's comments reflect the Giants broader strategy and their confidence in Jones. The conviction was also evident in the first episode of the offseason's "Hard Knocks" series, where team General Manager Joe Schoen and Assistant General Manager Brandon Brown reviewed the team's roster and emphasized the need to give Jones a fair chance.

"The reality is, three serious injuries in two years, we need to protect ourselves," Schoen said, highlighting the importance of giving Jones a proper opportunity to lead the offense. The Giants QB takes up 20 percent of the team's cap space and was prioritized over retaining star running back Saquon Barkley, who left for the rival Philadelphia Eagles .

Last season, Jones played in just six games before his injury, throwing for 909 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions, resulting in a QBR of 36.3. Despite the struggles, New York appears committed to seeing what Jones can do when fully healthy and given a proper chance to run the offense.
