Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran found himself in hot water after a mic caught him using a homophobic slur directed at a fan during a game against the Houston Astros .

The incident occurred during the bottom of the sixth inning in Boston's 10-2 loss to Houston. As Duran adjusted his gloves between pitches , he turned to the stands and muttered the offensive phrase, which was picked up on the television broadcast. After the game, Duran issued an apology through a team statement, expressing deep regret for his actions.

"During tonight's game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan," Duran said in a team statement. "I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person."

The Red Sox organization also released a statement , condemning the slur and echoing Duran's apology. "We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches, and staff on the importance of inclusivity," the team stated.

Fans were quick to react on social media, with many expressing disappointment and condemning Duran's choice of words. One fan wrote: "There is no defense of Jarren Duran's use of a homophobic slur toward a fan, and there is no place for that in our sport."

The incident happened just minutes after he was declared the Red Sox's Heart & Hustle Award nominee. Duran was awarded with the nod by voters consisting MLB former and current players. The award is presented yearly to a player who demonstrates a resounding passion for the sport and best illustrates the values, spirit, and traditions of baseball.

The center fielder's frustration during the game might have contributed to the outburst, although that is no excuse. He struck out in his first two at-bats and was walked in the sixth inning, advancing to third base before the inning ended with a double play.

He struck out swinging again in the bottom of the eighth, capping off a tough game for the Red Sox, who now hold a 61-55 record, placing them third in the American League East behind the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees .

Duran has had a strong season overall. In 116 games, he's batting .291 with 14 home runs, 58 RBIs, and 29 stolen bases. His recent performance has been impressive, with 31 doubles, 12 triples, 13 homers, and 22 stolen bases over his last 103 games.
