A map illustrates the disastrous impact a nuclear bomb would have if detonated in New York City . The maps, which show the doomsday aftermath of nuclear weapons exploding in major cities around the globe, were created with assistance from Alex Wellerstein, a nuclear historian at Stevens Institute of Technology.

If a bomb similar to the "B-83" - the largest in the US nuclear arsenal - were to explode in New York , the destruction would be massive. The "B-83" has a yield of 1.2 megatons.

Wellerstein's expert modeling suggests that such a dreadful event would lead to the deaths of 1,410,660 people. Additionally, there would be 1,638,610 injuries and the light blast damage radius would reach as far as Newark, reports the Irish Star .

This damage would result in shattered windows and potential injuries , despite being the "lightest" effect of a nuclear bomb explosion in an area. The fireball radius caused by the hypothetical explosion would mainly impact North Bergen and Union City.

According to the map, this reaction would instantly vaporize anything within its radius. At the very least, the explosion would reach a height of 0.94 miles. The heavy blast damage radius would extend for 1.44 miles, severely damaging or completely demolishing concrete buildings.

This level of destruction, which would result in nearly 100% fatalities, would primarily impact the Meatpackers District, according to the map. The radiation radius from the blast would spread just under miles from the detonation point. It would likely be fatal to most residents in the area, including those in Chelsea and Dumbo .

About 15% of survivors would probably die within a month due to cancer caused by the radiation levels. The moderate blast damage radius would extend for 3.5 miles, as per the model. This would cause most residential buildings to collapse and lead to widespread fatalities.

The risk of fires spreading is also increased, adding to the devastation. The thermal radiation radius would extend over seven miles. With this, there is a 100% certainty of third-degree burns.

However, this reaction to radiation is often painless because pain nerves are destroyed in the process. This radiation spread is shown to stretch as far as New Utrecht . Fortunately, these scenarios are purely hypothetical, and the likelihood of such weapons being used remains remote.
