An Olympic volunteer was arrested this week after allegedly killing his partner hours after the Paris Games closing ceremony.

The couple, who have not been named, both spent two-and-half weeks helping Olympic visitors to the sporting extravaganza in the French capital.

But on Tuesday the lifeless body of one of them – a 21-year-old woman who is thought to be Polish – was found in the flat they shared in the 18th arrondissement of the French capital.

"Her boyfriend has been arrested on suspicion of killing the victim," said an investigating source. "He is currently in custody."

Police broke into their flat in the early hours of Tuesday morning – at around 1.45am – after the woman was reported missing two days ago.

A spokesman for Paris prosecutors said: "An investigation into voluntary homicide has been entrusted to the 2nd district of the Paris judicial police after the discovery of the lifeless body of a young woman, aged 21, in an apartment in the 18th arrondissement."

He said her boyfriend has been wanted since Monday, after the disappearance of the young woman was reported at 7.25pm. Enquiries established the victim was last seen at 1am on Sunday night, after taking part in the Olympics closing ceremony.

The missing person’s phone was geolocated to a suburb north of Paris and then – at around 11pm – her mother in Poland said they had received a text message from a friend saying the partner had done ‘something stupid’.

Police went to the flat, and found the corpse, which had a blood clot on the left cheek, and traces of blood around the neck. The victim's boyfriend was in the same room, and described by the police as being ‘in a semi-comatose state’ after taking drugs and alcohol.

Questioning of the suspect was postponed because of his condition, said the investigating source. There were some 45,000 volunteers from 175 countries working during the summer Olympics in Paris.
