Bryson DeChambeau has four million reasons to rescue frustrating LIV Golf season

Bryson DeChambeau has enjoyed a remarkable season on and off the course, but that has not quite translated to his performances on LIV Golf.

DeChambeau won the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in June in remarkable fashion, edging out Rory McIlroy in one of the most dramatic major championship finales in recent memory. The win capped a hugely impressive season for DeChambeau at the majors, finishing in a share of sixth place at The Masters before a second-place finish at the PGA Championship.

The 30-year-old's image with supporters has also changed significantly. Once considered something of an outsider, BeChambeau has become one of the most popular players in the game, connecting with crowds like he never has before.

Yet by his very high standards, it has been a frustrating season on LIV. The two-time major champion joined the breakaway circuit as a founding member in 2022 and enjoyed a memorable season last year, winning twice late in the campaign to finish fourth in the standings.

In 2024, however, DeChambeau has just one top-three finish to his name, with victory eluding him on the globe-trotting Saudi Arabia-funded league. His performance levels have not dipped greatly, racking up six top-10s in 11 events ahead of the penultimate tournament of the campaign at The Greenbrier on Thursday.

But he sits in eighth place in the standings, with his hopes of winning the season-long order of merit mathematically over – with Joaquin Niemann and Jon Rahm duelling it out at the top of the table for the Individual Championship title and the $18 million bonus that comes with it.

However, all is not lost for DeChambeau, who still has a slim chance of sneaking into the top three. The $8m payout that comes for second place is out of reach, save for a remarkable turn of events that sees his rivals crumble over the final two events.

But the $4m bonus for finishing third is still within his grasp if he finishes the campaign strongly. DeChambeau sits 52.33 points behind third-placed Tyrrell Hatton heading into this week's tournament, and with 40 points up for grabs for the winner, a victory at The Greenbrier would firmly put DeChambeau in the frame for a top-three finish by the time the season finale tees off at Bolingbrook Golf Club in Illinois on Sep. 13.

While it has been a frustrating season for DeChambeau on a personal level, his Crushers GC is top of the team standings and two more solid performances from his squad – which is made up of Anirban Lahiri, Paul Casey and Charles Howell III – will secure their place as the No. 1 seed for the Team Championship in Dallas on Sep. 20.
