Colin Kaepernick is still eyeing a return to the NFL - and he even believes he can help a franchise win the Super Bowl .

Kaepernick has been out of the league since the 2016 campaign, despite enjoying a somewhat productive career in which he led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl. The 36-year-old burst onto the scene as a superstar dual-threat quarterback out of the 2011 NFL Draft , wowing fans in the Bay Area under Jim Harbaugh en route to Super Bowl XLVII where the Baltimore Ravens emerged victorious.

After he protested systematic inequality and police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem, Kaepernick found himself without a job. He became a global name, and many believe he was punished for his activism.

The NFL has changed significantly over the seven years since he last played, and his style of play has become more prevalent through the emergence of the likes of Jalen Hurts and two-time MVP Lamar Jackson . Kaepernick remains adamant he has a lot to offer.

“We’re still training, still pushing,” Kaepernick recently told Sky Sports when asked if he still wants to play in the NFL. “So hopefully. We’ve just got to get one of these team owners to open up.”

He added: “I mean, it’s something I’ve trained my whole life for. So to be able to step back on the field would be a major moment, a major accomplishment for me. Also, I think it’s something that I could bring a lot to a team and help them win a championship.”

Kaepernick is continuing to push for a roster spot ahead of the 2024 season. He played six seasons for the 49ers, throwing for 12,271 yards and 72 touchdowns. But he has not played since January 1, 2017.

Kaepernick’s most productive season came in 2014 when he played all 16 contests to go for 3,369 passing yards, 639 rushing yards, and 20 total touchdowns. The 49ers went 8-8 that season, a year after reaching the NFC Championship Game in his first full year as a starter.

The odds are stacked against him regarding a return, yet Kaepernick spoke highly of another goal of his - representing Team USA in flag football at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics when he will be 41. Kaepernick said: “Hopefully we’ll be out there.

“We’re gonna work on some things, see if we can make it in there. But would love to be out there.”
