We The Kings doubles down on 'gaslighting' at Sad Summer Fest as they confuse fans with 'new' song

Pop punk icons We The Kings are rehashing their old sound and hoping no one will notice.

In an ongoing viral bit, the band keeps joking that their old song Check Yes, Juliet is actually a brand new release. However, the tune was dropped in 2007 and dominated the airwaves during the mid-00s edgy pop era, alongside acts like All Time Low and Fall Out Boy. Fans online have been ultra confused, especially as they keep adding onto the bit by announcing more and more of their old tracks as "new."

Even in person, they didn't back down. While on stage at Sad Summer Fest in New York City , the band doubled down on the satirical take they've had of their own career. This time, though, they shook up the laughs as they approached the end of their set.

Lead singer Travis Clark asked the crowd who in the audience knew them. Given the demographic of the festival audience, the vast majority of the audience did with only a few hands going up to indicate an exception. However, those fans were met with little explanation when Travis claimed that they were about to play their biggest song... before launching into a cover of Mr. Brightside by The Killers.

The band didn't feel the need to clear anything up — just like how they still haven't broken the news to the confused Millennials on TikTok that the songs are, in fact, old. Most of the audience understood the bit, though, and just laughed along with them as they closed with the song Check Yes, Juliet.

The fans online seem to be having a good time with the joke. One wrote: "EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I open this dang app, We The Kings is gaslighting me."

"Sir I watched you perform live over 5 times you can't gaslight me with my favorite song," wrote another. The band replied: "I love that this is your favorite song, but I'm not sure which song you've heard us play 5 times since this JUST came out?"

Much of Sad Summer Fest focused on blasts from the past with some of pop punk's most iconic acts taking the stage. Staples in the industry, The Maine and Mayday Parade, headlined the show. It's inception came several years ago after the fall of the iconic Warped Tour era and was meant to fill the gap in every emo kid's heart.
