Royals 'astonished' security-wary Prince Harry has jetted to one of the most crime-ridden countries

Prince Harry has shocked the Royal Family by jetting off to Colombia despite his fears over security, according to a royal expert .

The Duke of Sussex has been vocal about his concerns over the security for himself and his family and has previously said he won't take his wife Meghan Markle back to the UK after they were stripped of their taxpayer-funded security. Despite these fears, Harry and Meghan have traveled to Colombia , which has a notoriously high crime rate.

Both the UK and US governments advise tourists to "reconsider" traveling to Colombia due to terrorism and kidnapping risks. Royal expert Tom Quinn has suggested the Royal Family is surprised Harry and Meghan were willing to travel to such a dangerous place .

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror US, Quinn explained: "There is astonishment that Harry’s obsession with his family’s security should have been jettisoned to visit to one of the world’s most crime-ridden countries."

He suggested members of the Royal Family believe the trip is an attempt by Meghan and Harry to improve their public image. Quinn said: "Prince William and his father see the Columbia visit as a desperate attempt by the Sussexes to maintain their public profile, in the face of mounting evidence that the couple’s star is waning.

"Numerous polls in the States suggest that Meghan and Harry are no longer seen as either interesting or influential and that will be causing the couple a great deal of pain. Their response? Visit any country that will have them and pay them the sort of attention they think they deserve."

Harry and Meghan lost their UK taxpayer-funded security when they stepped down from the Royal Family. In 2020, Harry started legal proceedings against the Home Office due to the decision.

His case was dismissed by the High Court after it ruled that the decision was lawful. However, the Court of Appeal later announced that it will hear Harry's appeal following a direct application from his lawyers.

In a written statement read at a previous hearing, Harry spoke about how he still considers the UK as his 'home' and 'central' to the heritage of his two young children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. He wrote: "The UK is a place I want them to feel at home, as much as where they live at the moment in the United States.

"That cannot happen if it's not possible to keep them safe when they are on UK soil. I cannot put my wife in danger like that and, given my experiences in life, I am reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm's way too."
